Remember what weekends were like pre-kids? Joanna Smith rediscovers her youth - dressing up and dancing 'til dawn at our Big Weekends.
And for dressing up, my vote goes to Festival of the 60s. I keep spreading the word, and between my friends and I, I reckon we've tried almost every break there is.
I've certainly mixed with the stars at these Big Weekends! My kids were dead impressed when I took home a T-shirt signed by Chico, who played at Hot Summer Party. Some of the big names are amazing. We've seen Vanilla Ice (awesome), East 17 (Brian Harvey is tiny!), The Troggs (Mum couldn't believe the photo), Gwen Dickey (she did ‘Carwash', my favourite song ever) and Boney M. with Maizie Williams (they haven't changed a bit!). And then there's the DJ sessions, where you can dance like you did when you were 18 – thank goodness the kids can't see me, they'd be so embarrassed….
Dressing up is half the fun, but what's great is that there's no pressure. When it's a weekend like Festival of the 60s people really go to town, but Saturdays are general dress-up nights where anything goes. I've seen a big gang of Scooby Doos; 20 stags eating dinner dressed as superheroes; the Spice Boys (whose girlfriends had dressed them and given them make-up tips); a male Maggie Thatcher; and two burly blokes doing a great job as the women from Abba. Some of the sights have had us all in stitches – especially a Borat lookalike, complete with lime-green mankini!'
Without having the kids bouncing on the bed at 7am, the biggest luxury for me on a Big Weekend is a lie-in the morning after a great night. And it's also brilliant having everything in spitting distance – no expensive taxis and no trekking home on my dance-weary feet. Even the eat-as-much-as-you-like cooked breakfast is an easy walk away! You also get to use the facilities on the Resort during the day. There's an indoor waterpark, cafés, a crazy golf course, cinema, beaches, and rides – if your head can handle it. A Bloody Mary in the bar is usually about as far as it goes for me…'
